Bruce Birren is an Institute Scientist at the Broad Institute and Director of the Broad’s Genomic Center for Infectious Diseases. He founded the Broad’s Diversity Initiative and an institute-wide mentoring program. He facilitates workshops for faculty and trainees to increase the effectiveness of research mentorship, with a focus on cultural awareness. He designs and leads workshops and longer-term interventions to help organizations promote a sense of belonging for all. He facilitated workshops on mentorship skills development for the advisors of Howard Hughes Medical Institute’s Gilliam Graduate Fellows Program and co-led the Leadership Training for the Gilliam Graduate Fellows. He is co-director of the Harvard Medical School Core for Mentorship Excellence, co-leads CIMER’s Advanced Mentorship Program, is a certified mediator, a Certified Professional Coach, and a CIMER Principle Facilitator.
