Facilitating Culturally Aware Mentoring

Rooted in principles of Culturally Responsive Facilitation (CRF) (House, Byars-Winston et al., 2023), this two-day facilitator training is designed to prepare participants to lead the in-person CAM workshop.
Themes and Concepts
Increased knowledge of, skills related to and self-efficacy in Culturally Responsive Facilitation (CRF) approaches, which are core to the Culturally Aware Mentoring (CAM) workshop. CRF is grounded in a racial-contextual framework and requires deep self-reflection, a commitment to intentionality, and cultural humility, as well as the use of intrapersonal and interpersonal discomfort as a vehicle for professional growth.
Enhanced understanding of the underlying goals and principles of the Culturally Aware Mentoring (CAM) workshop, as well as the philosophical and logistical approaches used. This includes a working understanding of how the workshop activities connect to the CAM learning objectives and what it looks like when the activities are and are not achieving the objectives.
Assessment of facilitator readiness and of what is needed for personal growth and development as individual CAM facilitators and for collaboration as CAM co-facilitators in CRF.
Create a detailed plan for the CAM workshop implementation, including strategies to address participant recruitment, workshop logistics, assessment and longer-term engagement.
Participant Requirements:
- Participation in facilitator training, such as Facilitating Entering Mentoring, or experience facilitating conversations on diversity, inclusion, or equity.
- All participants must have attended a CAM workshop. This can be the full-day in-person workshop, the six or nine-hour online workshop, or the CAM workshop provided through the HHMI Gilliam Fellowship program. If you are uncertain if the workshop you attended qualifies, please contact Stephanie House.
- All participants need to apply with at least one other person who can be their co-facilitator when implementing CAM. Practice facilitation within the workshop will also be done in co-facilitation pairs.
- Completion of the registration application.
